Normally we spend out time around here talking about engines that are massive. Sonny Leonard builds 1,000ci engines in his sleep these days. If you show up to the strip in a serious car with less than 600ci in it you may as well be driving a bulldozer, and we weep at the mere mention of multi-engined pulling tractors. But like all things, if there is a huge end of the spectrum, there has to be a tiny end and this engine, all 12 cylinders of it, can fit into a grown man’s hand. This video is surreal.
Subtitled in Spanish,we were able to pick up a few words here and there, but we know tiny crankshafts, cams, pistons, and valvetrain parts when we see them. The whole thing was obviously hand made and some of that process is shown, especially the machining of the crank, which left our jaws slackened.
Miniature engines are neat, but this thing is beyond description. The builder’s skills and patience are in the same category. This creation took him 1200 hours to complete.
Thanks to Doc Gadget for the tip!
Press play and be amazed!
During the assembly I notice there wasn’t no rings on the pistons when he installed them .
How’s this work ?
Dan
Where’s the spark plugs. or is this a Diesel type motor.
I was also wondering exactly how it ran. It looks like it might just be running on compressed air.
Regardless, precision machining on that scale for a hobbyist is damn impressive.
The engine is powered by compressed air.
Amazing watching him hand machining the crank.
Are there any full sized engines of a similar design? With the cams and half the valvetrain in the block?
Where’s the wiring harness for the Megasquirt?
Add ignition, and it’s time to pull out the NITRO!
WOW! It looks like an aviation engine. I’d guess Hispano Suzet. Hook this guy up with the dentist that made the P-51 and they can make a minature airforce.
