Of all the crazy stuff that happened during the 2013 NHRA Winternationals, Antron Brown’s scary high speed wreck was by far the worst. As you’ll see in the video below Brown’s engine exploded in a massive fireball at the finish line and at the exact same instant both rear slicks blew up turning the car into an unguided missile with Brown as its helpless passenger. Brown’s car is equipped with the safety capsule that NHRA approved last season and it stood up to the rigors of a crushing impact when the car slid backwards into the wall after the tires exploded.
The bent and broken car made a sickening slide all the way into the sand trap, resting on its side. The NHRA Safety Safari was right on the scene and Brown was able to crawl from the car under his own power. Reports are that Brown suffered some bumps and bruises but in watching this scene unfold, that’s small peanuts as compared to what it could have been.
Our words fail to do this justice. Hit the link below and watch Antron Brown go on a ride he never wants to repeat!
You have to wonder what went through Britney Force’s mind after seeing this.
I’am done later world.
Looks like there’s a downside to the capsule.
Hell of an explosion/crash. I’ve see a picture of the car as the engine went bang and there is fire inside the “safety” capsule. Crashes like this still happen, even on the 1000ft track, so lets go back to the correct length track 😛 😀
Capsule indeed.. It encapsulates flame. Get rid of it, and bring back 1/4 mile. Bad accidents can happen on any length of track.
Wow. Last time I saw a crash that bad was when I saw a TF lose his wing at half track, lost traction, engine blew and he went the last half of the track on his roll bar. I forget the driver’s name, but it happened at Sears Point in 89. I saw the car skid by me.
Glad the driver could walk away, better luck next time Antron! The need for escape is next on the safety list, huh? I’m with the 1/4 milers too. The way my Dad ran. And for street rides, get rid of the dial-a-speed crap. 50s and 60s racin’ rules, dialin’ speed drools.
Response to Liggett. The T/F crash you saw was Gary Ormsby’s issue with the failed wing. I was at Sears Point that day also. Yep, he went by me on his top, too. Musta been a rush watchin’ all those sparks goin’ by from the roll cage. R.I.P. Gary. Another cancer fatality.
Brown is very lucky getting out of that crash with just some bruises. hate to imagine if it had been any worse. they should improve the Capsule or get rid of it completely
What a RIDE!! Glad he is ok, but I hate the shorter tracks–bring back the 1/4 mile! If racing is in your blood–you want to R-A-C-E!!
Price of new dragster…$250.000
Price of dry cleaning firesuit…$35.00
Price of E-Ticket ride…Priceless
I also love , and grew-up with 1/4 mile racing. This last weekend, what would have happened to Gary Densham, or Schumaker going into sand with another 320′ of speed?
