Awesome Historic Drag Video: Dragsters, Altereds, and A/FX Action from Lions Drag Strip

Oh, is this a winner! An awesome three minute home movie film from Lions Drag Strip back in the 1960s, it captures several fuel dragsters smoking the hides, and ultra rare footage of Hubert Platt’s insane Georgia Shaker Falcon yanking the front end a couple times on the same run! Also shown are Dickie Harrell’s A/FX Nova, and Butch Leal’s wild altered wheelbase Plymouth.

Lions is probably the most romanticized drag strip in the history of the sport, and rightfully so. It was the emotional center of the drag race universe until the track was closed in 1972. Cramped, narrow, and not known as one of the nicer strips in Southern California, Lions charm and appeal lay in the hall of fame caliber talent on all levels that raced there every week.

Everyone from Mickey Thompson to Steve Evans to C.J. (Pappy) Hart ran the place, and any one who was somebody in drag racing made laps there. Was Lions the greatest strip ever? Every time we see footage like this, we find it hard to argue against the place.

NOTE: Platt’s run against Dick Harrell happens right around 1:45 and is truly freaking awesome.
