Awesome Historic Indy Video: All the Big Names Qualifying in 1964

When the news broke the other day about a “new” Dallara chassis to be used by Indy car racers in the coming years, lots of people excitedly reported on it. We didn’t because frankly, it didn’t strike us as all that big a deal. Same motor in the same place, some aerodynamic tweaks, and promises of cheaper costs of construction and better safety. Consider this video of qualifying from the 1964 Indy 500 as our jovial protest against the spec world of Indy car racing these days. Every single car in this video is different and they even had their engines in different places!

1964 was an important year in Indy history because it marked the last time a front motor car would win the race. Sadly, that was the first step to what we have today. AJ Foyt won the race in 1964 and as you’ll see in this video, he had stiff competition.
