Bitchin’ Video: A Look Back At The Glory Days Of Modified Eliminator! Famous Racers Talk And Small Blocks Scream!

Bobby Bennett at CompetitionPlus.com is a BangShifty kind of guy. How do we know? Because he’s as hung up on the awesome past  of drag racing as we are and he makes killer videos that highlight it! This is probably his best video yet and it is a look back at the legendary class of Modified Eliminator. This was a pounds per cubic inch based eliminator that became renown for interesting cars and incredible revs. As you will see in this video, guys were leaving the starting line at nine grand AND THEN SOME. Stick shift transmissions were also standard equipment in Modified cars so the specter of the huge revs and screaming engines combined with the prowess of great drivers made this class a drag racing fan’s dream until it was essentially disbanded in the early 1980s and the cars ended up going into the realm of bracket competition or were simply sold off by owners who quit the sport.

There are several great things in this short film but our favorite part is the beginning with guys like recent pro stock champion Mike Edwards, legendary engine builder David Nickens, and the always awesome Vinnie Barone are all giving their account of what Modified eliminator cars sounded like. They instantly become 10 year old kids making engine sounds, jamming imaginary gear levers, and smiling ear to ear. You can tell that these men TRULY loved that class. Gene Fulton is also interviewed and there is plenty of great archival footage of his legendary “white wagon” (a car that CompPlus is recreating as a project build).

This is the best of all worlds. You get the great old race footage, interviews with the players, and information on the hows and whys of the class. Two thumbs up to the CompPlus crew for this one. It is worth every second you’ll invest in watching it. (and I’m not just saying that because CompPlus honcho Bobby Bennett Jr. was once my boss!)

NHRA viewership is declining and many think Drag Racing is on its way out. I think the trouble began when they took the backyard mechanic out of it and decided to go Corporate and turn it into a spectator sport with professional teams and big money – the average person can’t relate to these cars. Their TV coverage usually only highlights Top Fuel Classes and the “little guy” is never shown. This video discusses the deletion of the “Modified” Classes back in the early ’80’s which I think is the beginning of the end to NHRA Drag Racing. The new classes were just to expensive to compete in and the average person dropped out. NHRA tried to hang onto them by creating “Bracket Car Classes”, which just isn’t the same as “Heads Up” racing. JMI

I hated the “Super” back then when it started and still hate those classes. To me it was the first chapter on the demise of NHRA.

Damn I miss those dry hops!
