Bonneville Video: Bruce Meyer Plus Mike Cook Plus A Rowdy 427 Equals A 200 MPH Roadster On The Salt

For lots of us, racing a fast roadster at Bonneville is a dream that we may or may not ever get to see through. Cars like the Beck – Cummins – Davidson- Thornsberry roadster have done things that no one ever thought possible with an old roadster. In the case of those guys, they went 300 freaking miles per hour. Running 200-mph in one is a hell of an accomplishment and this video featuring the 747 roadster of Bruce Meyer shows he and his crew chasing the 200-mph mark on their first visit to the salt with the car in 2012.

Originally built by pal o’ BangShift Mike Cook, the car was equipped with an injected 427ci Chevy engine to crest the two century mark. The team was not out to rewrite the records books in 2012, but rather to get Meyer accustomed to what it is like to handle one of these cars at that speed on the salt.   Bruce has been in the 250s at Bonneville in an enclosed and far more aerodynamic machine, so he had confidence in his abilities, but not over confidence when stepping into a totally new (to him) machine.

Meyer is a guy who has done a lot for hot rodding and preservation over the years. He was one of the guys who helped to found the Petersen Automotive Museum in California, he owns an amazing collection of cars, and he’s one of the true “good guys” in the hobby. We dig the fact that he also gets out there and pushes his personal limits like the rest of the racers on the salt.

We’re not sure what the guys are coming back with in 2013, but by the sounds of this video,  it is going to be a whole lot more than the rowdy 427 that shoved the roadster over the 200-mph mark in 2012. Oh, one more shocking note. Meyer is 71 years old. The dude looks like he’s 50!
