Best of BangShift – Carnage Video: A Stroker Boss 429 Explodes on the Dyno

This Boss 557 meets a spectacular end on the engine dyno when it appears that the flywheel explodes at peak RPM during a pull. The accompanying notes with the video say that there were multiple problems leading up to the test and that a stock 429ci flywheel was used. It seems like that was a mistake.

The one thing we cannot determine from watching and stopping the video is whether or not the engine actually falls off the stand or if the camera movement just makes it seem that way. Depending on what the shrapnel did and where it went, anything is possible, we suppose.

The ‘splosion happens at 18 second into the video and it’s loud as well as graphic. There are sparks and stuff flying everywhere!

Hit the deck at 18 seconds!!

  1. Rotard Rx7 guy

Hah this boys is why no ford should push even 7k rpm. I will keep shifting at 9k in my Rx7 though

This was documented over at 460ford.com. The owner forgot his billet flywheel at home on dyno day, and decided to use a stock cast iron piece for the session. What you see here is the result of that cast flywheel exploding at high rpm.
