Close Enough: Riding Along In The Only Surviving Vanishing Point Challenger R/T

Close Enough: Riding Along In The Only Surviving Vanishing Point Challenger R/T

A white 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T with Colorado plates. You know the movie…and if you don’t, stop here, go watch Vanishing Point, and thank us later. Actually, we should probably expand on that for a second: there are two Vanishing Point productions. One is the 1971 film that is a headtrip of good music, Barry Newman as a Vietnam vet and disgraced ex-cop at the wheel of a 440-powered car that he is ferrying out from Denver to San Francisco, wound out on Benzedrine pills and pure adrenaline. The other is a 1997 made-for-TV remake that stars Viggo Mortensen, changes up the character of the Challenger driver, Kowalski, into a hunted man on the run from the cops as he tries to get home to his wife as she endures a difficult pregnancy. Obviously, gearheads tend to think more of the original than the remake, but that part is up to you.

Here’s the deal with the Challengers: for the 1971 flick, four 440/four-speed cars and one 383/automatic machine were provided by Chrysler, who had been tapped for the hero car by 20th Century Fox studio executive Richard Zanuck. He wanted to find a way of thanking Chrysler for providing cars for only a dollar a day and listened to the stunt guys, who wanted the horsepower, the sturdiness of the front suspension, and that overall the car was a solid, stout choice. Can’t fault them there, can you? But have you heard of any of those cars at auction, or being restored? Well, it’s because as far as anyone knows, the cars were scrapped…all of them. Unlike the recently revealed Bullitt Mustang, there isn’t even a strong rumormill of where one is hiding. The car that you’ll see here is from the 1970 remake and is a 1970 Hemi R/T car instead of the 440-powered machine.

A white Dodge Challenger R/T singing the deep-throated song of Ma Mopar. It should be tearing ass across the vast stretches of land in the Southwest with the sun setting. Nothing but mountain peaks, random freaks, and the promise of making it before Monday.

Why do they always make shit remakes of classic films?

The worst one ever was Get Carter with Stallone playing Carter and it was set in the USA not on Tyneside. Still – maybe the accents were a bit better as some actors in the original in pre voice-coach sounded like they were from Mars….

The reason why the cars from the 1971 movie were scrapped was because once the film came out Chrysler saw that it had very strong drug use overtones in it which pissed Chrysler off.

The 383 automatic was used just once in the film – to tow the Camaro sans drivetrain into the bulldozers. It was never actually on screen.

The rumor at the time was that all of the Challengers were destroyed, and
the Camaro was used for the final scene.

Nice. I like both versions. I have the dirty and clean diecasts. Nice to see some of the cars survived. Ted’s a lucky guy! Thanks for the article Brian
