Carnage Video: Failed Burnout Leads to Massive Clutch Explosion

Clutch explosions are among the most horrific examples of automotive component failures. Few things attached to a car have the ability to cause more instant carnage, to things both mechanical and human, than a fast spinning clutch that comes apart. Many have been killed over the years at the race track and potentially even on the street when clutch discs, and pressure plates have become literal 8,000 RPM saw blades. The guys horsing around with the Firebird in this video came close to meeting a horrible fate in just that way. Thanks for Jon Sandahl for the tip!

If you drive or race a manual transmission car and have not invested in an SFI approved bellhousing or scatter-shield, after watching this video and seeing the damage that this car sustains from a clutch explosion, you’ll be thinking about it lots. To say the driver is lucky that he still has feet is the understatement of the decade. The video claims that the car was totaled after this!
