We have all the respect in the world for those of you out there that make your living as professional mechanics. It is a hard job, an often thankless job, and one that far too few people understand the difficulties and technical expertise of. Videos like this one are cool because they show, in a really condensed format some cool mechanic’n action. You are going see a diesel mechanic rebuild a big Cummins N-14 engine via time-lapse in just about three minutes.
The N14 is a legendary engine for Cummins. One that has long ben loved by truckers and fleet mechanics for being strong, reliable, and almost indestructible. The N14 was the follow up to the Big Cam 855 engine that was the bread and butter of the company for years. With a 5.5″ bore and a 6″ stroke, it displaces 14-liters and in various forms produced 310-525hp depending on how you spec’d yours out. They are the first electrically controlled engines from Cummins and in that respect were kind of the answer to the Series 60 from Detroit Diesel.
It is a big, heavy 2,800lb lump and you will see why as it goes back together. Stacking the heads and other components up on the block like Legos adds weight in a hurry! This is a cool video and the dude who does most of the work by himself sure seems to have good handle on the operation.
