One of the highlights of the 2013 World Series of Drag Racing was the nostalgia nitro funny car action. Les Mayhew was there to record the melee and about a week ago he dropped this awesome video featuring a unique pair of cars at Cordova Dragway. That pair is Cruz Pedregon and Bazz Young. Pedregon was driving his exceptionally awesome California Charger Pontiac Firebird and Bazz Young was in his Thunder Down Under Camaro. What makes this pair unique is the fact that Young is an executive at Snap-On who is the guy that manages the company’s sponsorship of Pedregon’s NHRA funny car. Don’t worry, the Cruzer doesn’t go easy on him here.

Outside of the cool cars and people involved, this video is awesome on several other levels. The first is that it was filmed after the sun had just dipped below the horizon and the sky has turned those awesome colors that it is want to do in the summer. That’s a magical hour at a drag strip. From the first night I ever called a big race, I have loved the look, the feeling, and the whole scene of a summer night at the drags after the sun has gone down.

It normally means that the temperature is going to be dropping from thermonuclear to human, cars tend to go quicker and faster with the better air, and the crowd always gets more rowdy. Look, pretty much the whole country has been in the depths of horrible weather for the last couple of weeks. Watching this video will take you right to the middle of the summer. You’ll smell nitro, feel the evening air, and wish the days away for evenings like this to become the norm again. They’re coming folks, and this Mayhew film will help them get here a little quicker.

This video is full of the great editing, camera angles, and creativity that you’e come to expect from all Les Mayhew films. His use of announcer Bret Kepner’s call of the round is masterful and since he totally gets the sport and what his viewers want, we have equal doses of Kepner’s expert commentary as well as the vicious sounds of funny cars running damned near the straight can through their engines.
