When Tesla unveiled the P85D version of the Model S, the power figures went from impressive (for an EV) to simply impressive. 691 horsepower and 687 ft/lb of near-instanteanous torque make the all-electric P85D run 0-60 in 3.2 seconds, a damn fast time for any four-door. But what does that kind of performance actually look like? You can watch outside-the-car launches all day long and not understand what is actually happening. One of the best ways to demonstrate the true impact of performance is the “scared passenger test”. Simply put, have someone in the car who has no experience with the car, and record their reaction. If it’s impressive or disappointing, you’ll know in short order.
In the case of the P85D, we can assume that the car is as impressive as it’s claimed to be. “Brooks”, the owner of this particular P85D, filmed the reactions of several friends as they rode along. From “oh my god!” to straight-up profanity, you get it all. It almost leaves you wondering why this $94,000 sedan doesn’t come equipped with an “oh, shit” handle. The best part of it is after all of the adults go through their panic attacks, he takes his kids for a ride. The Tesla rips the phone out of the little girl’s hand and the little boy starts giggling like a maniac. That’s all we need to see!
And, just for shits and giggles, Tesla is going to be sending one of it’s updates out to P85Ds. It will knock a tenth off of the 0-60 time, though Elon Musk claims that the upgrade is for traction in snow. Riiiiight.
