For a while now we’ve shown you the brilliant little over-powered go-karts that Grind Hard Plumbing Co. make using ordinary Power Wheels bodies. It’s effectively a way of realizing a dream that kids have when they are disappointed over an electric battery system’s power output: give this thing guts and make it do cool stuff. And they have, a couple of times over, with a Mustang and a Jeep. But we never really followed along on an actual build of one of their project karts before. With the Mustang, we figured that it was hackery, a kart frame, a motorcycle engine and a healthy disrespect of the self-preservation instinct. With the Jeep, we saw some engineering know-how, especially regarding the suspension.
They are now building a new kart, this time using a fifth-gen Camaro shell that’s originally meant to be “Bumblebee” from the Transformers movie series. In place of the battery sits a 500cc Polaris-sourced engine that’s made by Fuji Heavy Industries (read: Subaru), and instead of just being a street kart or just being an off-roader, the plan is to give the Camaro an adjustable suspension so it can do both, using air shocks. Sounds ambitious, but check out the first part of the actual build, where the frame begins to come together. The craftsmanship in this little beast is actually pretty impressive so far!
