It is kind of amazing to think about but Gumby was on television from 1955-1989. That’s one hell of a run. We can remember watching the short claymation sketches as kids and we’re sure many of you can, too. What we didn’t remember is this awesome short that must have been made in the late 1950s or early 1960s featuring Gumby cruising in his hot rodded T-Bucket with Pokey at his side. The pair talk carbs, they burn rubber all over town, and eventually they get their car stolen by an unwitting old lady who has recently lost her glasses. It is campy gearhead greatness to the highest order.

It looks to us like a Revell “Big T” model was used for Gumby and Pokey to cruise in, but maybe some of you experienced modelers out there have a better handle on the exact kit that was used to construct this car. The motor is packing six Stromberg looking carbs on it though, and they is cool! We have to give Scott Payton of Route 2 Media credit for digging this clip up, although we’re a little concerned that he was cruising YouTube for Gumby videos!

As we’re sure production values were low, there are some clay characters that play multiple roles in this one. The gas station character has a pretty bad day for himself over the span of the five minutes this film takes to watch. From the small town atmosphere, the Irish sounding cop, and the “gosh-gee-willickers!” type language, this video from a simpler time!
