Before the modern day towing and payload capacity wars between truck makers, the big selling point was how good the trucks rode. All kinds of different “tests” were use to illustrate this point, but this one from Ford in 1969 is a classic. Using a couple of sticks, a bunch of 4×4 lumber and a poop ton of light bulbs, some “sceintists” at Ford show us all how bitchin’ the truck rides.
This looks to have been shot at El Mirage or one of the other dry lakes out west. The scorched and cracked Earth gave us that idea. You’ve got to love the fact that the guys setting up the test are in lab coats in the middle of the freaking desert. It must have been super fun to shoot this ad, although the dude driving the truck may have never walked correctly again after the fourth or fifth take.
All those poor light bulbs!
I’m not a ford guy but the twin I beam suspension was the best !
And ford drop it .
Long travel , no popped ball joints.
the add is funny though 🙂
The good old old days when if you could afford a car you buy a truck.
Those days long gone !
The Twin I Beam front suspension is still used on 4X2 F250, 4X2 F350 and all E-Series (Econoline) vans!
Guaranteed to wear tires very fast, but it holds up well !
