Green Valley Raceway which was located in North Richland Hills, Texas had a great 20 year run as a road course and drag strip facility. Sanctioned by both the NHRA and AHRA during its time as an active strip, there were lots of big meets held there over the years and lots of old timers talk proudly about competing and winning at the track. The drag strip was part of the 1.6-mile road course that the facility also had and that road course held everything from SCCA club events to Trans-Am and Can-Am races until the doors were closed on the place in 1984. According to what we have read, there is a housing development over top of where the race track(s) were.
This video was shot during the middle 1960s (as best we can discern from looking at the footage). We’re guessing that this was a big AHRA meet of some sort. The crowd is huge and you will see period gassers, lots of blown dragsters, competition coupes, some ratty looking machines that look to be the efforts of local car clubs or other groups, and tons of fantastic old push and tow trucks dragging the cars around. It was a nice wide place as you’ll see. Many strips of that era are treacherously narrow, but not Green Valley. You’ll probably be surprised by the scope of the place, honestly.
You’ll get goose bumps at about 2:30 when the Stone, Woods, and Cook Swindler tows by the camera on a trailer followed by (our opinion) the best looking gasser ever built, the red Willys of Big John Mazmanian. This is another indication that the meet was a “national” style event, drawing the big hitters out from the west coast, although those guys did tour a lot back in the day. There is a parade of gassers at about 1:45 that’ll knock your socks off, too. Nothing outstanding or outrageous about the cars, but just to see these things in their natural state as they were in the middle 1960s is awesome…in our opinion anyway.
This is a great way to spend three minutes this afternoon before the weekend kicks off. Zone out and take a trip back in time to a sunny, warm weekend in Texas nearly 60 years ago. Man, we need to fix this time machine!
