How To Kill An Afternoon: Racing A Hot-Rodded Lawnmower Against A Volkswagen Beetle!

A racing vehicle, a 1973 Volkswagen Super Beetle isn’t. While there are positive aspects worth mentioning when it comes to the iconic VW, acceleration was never, ever going to be a strong suit in stock form…contemporary reviews would praise it’s handling, it’s fuel economy, and it’s brakes, but often words like “dangerously slow” would be used to best describe the get-up-and-go of the Bug. It’s not fast…unless you park it on the line next to a riding lawn mower, which is simply a stunted go-kart with a purpose in life. If it’s stock, the Bug will absolutely and utterly decimate any riding mower around. But if said lawnmower yanks the wheels at launch while the rider is ripping through gears, what then? Well, for starters, the lawn mower has had more enhancements than most professional baseball players injected into it, and it should be lighter than the VW, too. Suddenly, this is looking more and more matched up and interesting. Using a side road somewhere in North Carolina as the racetrack and a mailbox a few hundred yards down as the competition section, which one will actually be faster? Keep in mind…the lawn mower doesn’t need a mile to hit 42 miles an hour…
