I’ll warn you from the start: Watch this video only with headphones on if anybody else is nearby. Mr. Regular, of Regular Car Reviews fame, is blunt and outspoken when he isn’t in his alter-ego mode, and for this video, he gets to wheel around everybody’s favorite pariah, the Toyota Prius. We love the Prius around here…as much as McTaggart likes wasps, Lohnes likes snow and Chad likes to shave. We celebrated when Finnegan and Freiburger exterminated one with a tank. We’d love to see an all-Prius demolition derby, if it weren’t for the environmental impact, and the fact that these things have all the get-up-and-go of a constipated snail. But he does make a point as he goes along: does the Prius, Toyota’s ideal of car that splits between a Corolla and a Camry while getting ok fuel economy, do a good job of being the anthesis to a gear head’s ideal of what a vehicle should be? That answer is absolutely and without question a yes, and here he shows us why we need a Prius around to show us what “good” really is.

For April Fools’ Day, I announced a plug and play ECU for the Prius on DIYAutoTune’s Facebook page. I’d never seen one of our gag announcements get such a huge reaction. Priuses seem to be an anti-car in many ways. They even seem to have been designed with a “It doesn’t work like a normal car, so why should it have a normal car interface?” mentality, with a dongle instead of a key and a forward/reverse switch instead of a shift lever.
That’s a great joke! My best swing was telling a teenager who asked about my block heater plug on my diesel 2500, that it was a new plug in hybrid model.
I had to drive one for work for a while. The most uncomfortable car I have ever driven. I had less back pain driving 40 year old cars with springs poking my hiney. Thank Gawd for all those over zealous “unintended acceleration” stories. None of the tree hugging celebs wanted to ride in one anymore. Then we got a bunch of hybrid Lexus SUV’s instead. Not only much more comfy, but you could actually carry two whole suit cases in it
