It’s Just A Little Rusty, It’s Still Good: Waking Up An Old Chevy That Hasn’t Run Since 1989!

It’s Just A Little Rusty, It’s Still Good: Waking Up An Old Chevy That Hasn’t Run Since 1989!

Our boy Derek at Vice Grip Garage is at it again. He’s gotten word that a Chevy truck from the mid-1960s is up for grabs. That would be a dream score…but this is a truck that has been sitting since 1989. In Minnesota. With flappy bed sides, no seat and half of the stuff raided off of the engine. What’s the harm? Well…lots, to be honest. Dredging up a vehicle that hasn’t moved under it’s own power since I was in kindergarten is always going to be a daunting task. The fuel system is going to be complete garbage, almost guaranteed. You’re lucky if the engine isn’t seized up. You’ll be even luckier if you can get it to spin over on it’s own power and if it moves on it’s own power without a huge infusion of work, then you’re doing something right.

Ain’t gonna lie to you, the amount of “body lightening” this Chevy has going on is the kind of stuff that would make a fella turn tail and go hunting for a different truck in a different climate, like Arizona. I know, you can get pretty much every sheetmetal part for one of these trucks easily enough, but there is still a lot of sheetmetal that sounds a bit too crispy for our tastes. Will this six-cylinder, three on the tree Chevy rise up from the middle of the forests and be something once more? Time will tell…
