Running a Flathead V8 Without a Cylinder Head!

Running a Flathead V8 Without a Cylinder Head!

This video cracked us up and had us pressing play multiple times just to gawk. It starts with a closeup shot of a running Ford flathead V8 that sounds as though it has a big time miss. As the camera man pans around the mill we quickly discover it does have a big miss, because there’s no cylinder head on the other side of the motor!

It is really fun to watch the pistons wizz up and down in the bores and the valves pop open and closed right there in the breeze.

The reason this is possible on a flattie is because the engine uses two water pumps, one for each side of the block. Because that side of the motor is not being fed any water, it is content to zing around and not make a great big mess. We bet you’ll do like we did and take this show in multiple times! It is cool!

Thanks for the tip Tony!

  1. Chevy Hatin' Mad Geordie

So why ruin a classic motor?

Far better to use a Chevy smallblock and run it to destruction – especially if it was someone else’s car….

  2. cap'n fast

man, i bet that puppy can really launch some tennis balls for the retrievers to fetch. totally cool!
