Practical Application: Can the EcoVette Actually Meet The 40MPG Goal In Traffic?

A little while ago, we tipped you off to a project involving a C5 Corvette with a six-speed and the promise of this car making the 40 miles per gallon mark. For comparison, that would equal the same MPG that McTaggart’s 2012 Chevrolet Cruze Eco gets with an engine that’s using almost a quarter of the engine capacity of the LS1 in the Corvette. If proven, that’s a surprising figure and would certainly suck less to drive than any typical high-MPG car you can find. Geo Metro? Honda Civic? Prius? How smug would you be driving past all of those cars, knowing you were having your cake and eating it too?

On the dyno, where conditions are pretty predictable and can be altered, the EcoVette managed to hit the mark, but no dyno time is going to comp for traffic, construction zones, outdoor weather or any other variable you are likely to find on the road. Are you quick to call BS on any manufacturer’s claim of excellent MPG? Well, we suspect that you were probably quick to call out this Corvette for being a bit of YouTube clickbait fun, right? Well, it’s frigid near Chicago, it’s supposed to crank out 40 MPG, and it’s a beautiful sunny day outside. Hit it.
