My father went through a few cars before his clock ran out in 2005. Most were simply daily beaters, nothing to get worked up about. He had a Pontiac GTO he always reminisced about, either a 1968 or 1969 model. He had an early 1980s Jeep Renegade that he regretfully sold, and at one point in time he had a very late dentside Ford stepside that was his baby…whenever the transmission was actually playing along, which wasn’t often. Most of his time behind the wheel during life was actually spent in semi trucks. He tolerated my gearhead ways, but he was also quick to point out that I didn’t need to blow every last dime I had on the next newest shiny machine. Sadly, that didn’t quite set into place…
Far as I know, none of his vehicles have survived. The GTO and Jeep have been gone for decades, I don’t know when he sold the Ford, the Grand Prix that I used to burn rubber with when I was in high school rusted to the ground, and the square-body Chevy wound up going to my sister, who drove it until it finally gave up the ghost. But if you told me that any of his vehicles still existed, I’d figure out how to get it home. I’d have to.
That’s pretty much the theme with this video from Vice Grip Garage. Derek has been chasing a 1956 Buick Special for a decade now. He used to own it, but before he had the paperwork his father was the owner. He managed to get the keys and paperwork back into his hands and now he’s got a roadtrip from Texas back home to Minnesota to look forward to. This is the first part of a three part series that will see the Special returning home.
Absolutely cool.
