Scoring points in racing is something that has never stayed the same for very long, no matter the series. NASCAR likely leads the league on the manner and way that they have evolved their points gathering over the years. This fantastic video from NASCARMan History on YouTube, you will see how all seven generations of NASCAR Points have worked and it’s both mind-boggling and hilarious. It is also interesting to see how attitudes and perspective changes over the years. There has been no flawless program, but there’s always seemingly been an effort to make it better as time goes on.
The fact that Bill France kind of lost the handle on the whole thing in the late 1960s and had a guy he went to high school with come up with the new system is about the most NASCAR thing we have ever heard. The fact that they did it on the back of a napkin while drinking beer is even more so.
We love history like this because you never really hear about it in this way. We know there are “points changes” but when you see how they have evolved when we see them all made in succession. It also provides an interesting window into how series executives are constantly on the lookout to incentivize competition right down to the wire.
