We typically do not sing the praises of Toyota here at BangShift…quite the opposite really, but when something cool gets built we’re all over highlighting it. In this case, that cool thing is a Toyota that was built in Japan for drifting competition. Why is it cool? Simple. It is an FR-S with a NASCAR spec “Toyota” small block V8 in it that screams like a banshee, smokes tires like it hates them, and even uses an old school quick change rear end. Talk about a mash up of stuff! Coolest of all? The engine was built by Ed Pink Racing Engines. The “Old Master” has officially had his hands in every freaking form of motorsports now!
This video was taken in Japan but is dubbed into English with Japanese subtitles. There is plenty of in-car and out of car footage, interviews with drivers, mechanics, and engineers, and audio of that 358ci engine yelling at the top of its lungs while tires get incinerated. Dig the weird way these cars are set up while the in-car footage is playing. As soon as the driver goes to turn into a corner, the car is already starting to rotate and then it is on the driver to give it more throttle, some hand brake, etc. Certainly a unique skill set to excel in the drifting world at the highest levels.
Thanks for the tip Zombie289!

Short wheelbase, big torque line…yes. I’ll take two.
Wow Brian. Getting brave after throwing Dave under the bus testing the waters with the RX7 and it going better than you thought. 🙂
I sent Brian a text saying the same thing as soon as I saw this!
The FRS or the Subie version is a car I would love to have as a everyday fun driver . The one that toyota did here is the one i would want to build when I wore it out. Keep him balanced Dave. I love the little pocket rockets. And thanks for taking one for the team.
That’s awesome!
