Slingshot Catastrophe Video: Watch Kenny Winward Suffer A Horrible Dragster Wreck In The 1970s

Since basking in the glory of nostalgia action last weekend we’ve been craving the opportunity to pilot a front engine dragster. After watching this video, we may be rethinking that decision. Ok, maybe not but it certainly illustrates the dangers and potential horrors that await a driver when things go badly. The coolest part of this video though is the story of the guy driving the car, Ken Winward.

Winward got his career started in 1954 and as of 2011 he was still going strong, racing at 74 years old. He has competed in a bunch of different classes and in a bunch of different cars over the years. From nitro powered iron to blown top alcohol dragsters, Winward has tamed them all during his decades long love affair in the sport. This video however, highlights one of his less successful days. We’re not sure what wreck this track happened at, but since Ken’s career was largely spent in Division One, it is probably somewhere on the east coast or at least the eastern half of the country.

This video is proof that there were some bad days during drag racing’s “good old days”.
