So Tesla Sent A Car To Space…That’s Nice. Škoda Actually Sent A Superb To Mars!

So Tesla Sent A Car To Space…That’s Nice. Škoda Actually Sent A Superb To Mars!

Sometimes you have to strike while the iron is hot. Or, in this case, as soon as the 2008 Tesla Roadster is nothing more than a dot in the night sky. Look, make no mistake that what SpaceX did with the Falcon Heavy mission is a monumental achievement and a step back towards scientific discovery and wonder for many, a step that is most certainly welcomed. But at the same time…dude, you sent a red sports car to space, with a model of a red sports car on the dashboard, Bowie playing on repeat (ok, that part is cool, too) and “Don’t Panic!”, a reference to A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy plastered on the infotainment screen as a punchline. If you thought for one second that the launch of the Roadster wasn’t going to become a punchline somewhere along the way, well…sorry, but it’s cannon fodder too good to not take aim at.

Škoda is one of the Volkswagen Group’s lesser-known nameplates in the States. Unless you are a rally fan or have been to Europe, you shouldn’t be too familiar with them. They went from being a communist car company with a horrific reputation at the fall of the Berlin Wall to an upmarket brand in short order after they were acquired by VW, and now are considered a premium brand of sorts. This car, the Superb, is a large sedan that shares the same modular platform that VW uses on many car lines, including the Golf, Tiguan and Jetta. It didn’t get shot into space on a rocket with a young billionaire going absolutely berserk on the ground. But it did do one thing that Elon’s Tesla isn’t going to do: it went to Mars.

Ok, Mars, France. Geez…so picky about the details…

I am guessing that after the Tesla deal many Ford and Chevy ad execs put in for early retirement or just got stupid drunk
I would like to have been there when the higher ups walked in the ad dept and said well…how we gonna beat that??
