The Necropsy: Find Out What Actually Killed The Engine In The Mighty Car Mods’ Mitsubishi!

When the smoke clears, you’ve determined that you are alright and that the car is not longer on fire, the next question is almost always, “Well…what the f**k happened?!” It takes effort to make an engine just straight-up die, especially a small four-banger that wasn’t huffing nitrous and didn’t punch a window out of the block’s wall. This is the 4G15, one member of the Mitsubishi “Orion” engine series, and one of the longest-lived. They aren’t known for their power, but they have been around since the early 1980s. Chances are, if you’re familiar with any late 1980s-early 1990s Mitsubishi, Diamond Star Motors products or early Hyundai Excels, you know this engine. It’s low power, low effort, and if you actually treat it like a real car instead of a rented mule, will last for quite a while. But you know what a 4G15 that didn’t come from the factory with a turbo hates? Boost. Lots of boost. In stock form, this is a roughly 100 horsepower engine. But on the “2SEXY” Mitsubishi Lancer owned by Mighty Car Mods, it was being force-fed via a turbocharger that had been fitted to the car while it was still in it’s “Hot Import Nights” stage. Mitsubishi blocks and turbochargers normally do go together…but after the engine has been beefed up, at least. You think that kinked connecting rod is impressive? Wait until you see what the guys at The Skid Factory found as they tore it apart! Hit play below and check out the full extent of the damage this four-spot flower pot gained while racing a real Evo!
