This 1972 Dodge Monaco Just Reeks Of Cool, From The Black Paisley Interior To The Shaker Scoop

This 1972 Dodge Monaco Just Reeks Of Cool, From The Black Paisley Interior To The Shaker Scoop

I have been aware of this 1972 Monaco’s existence for about a year and a half, but until now knew nothing about it other than I want it. Just look at it! The stance is perfect. The wheels are individual choice, but in this case I’m hard-pressed to think of a better style, and the staggered 20/22 inch layout fits the size of the vehicle. The Shaker scoop, a Chrysler design I normally don’t like, looks perfect on the big C-body. And then you move inside into the black paisley-covered interior. This is a cruiser as a cruiser should be. Yes, we know the damn thing is as big as an aircraft carrier, but you don’t care when you are rolling around with the windows down and the sound of the V8 rumbling though the dual exhaust. The miles melt away and you lose yourself on the highway while crossovers scramble to get out of your way and the Prius brigade have a collective seizure over the sight of this land yacht.

Mike Musto gets to roll this Mopar around southern California and while he’s unimpressed with the 360ci V8 (1972 was the first year for a small-block in a Monaco), he loves the rest and it is easy to see why. Just sitting still the Monaco has a presence to it that makes it stand out wherever it roams.

  1. Chevy Hatin' Mad Geordie

It there ever was a car crying out to be painted black its this beauty!

Apart from that this may be the best car I’ve ever seen on these hallowed pages!

Now where did I put that stain remover?

Agreeing with Geordie that this needs to be a color other than butternut yellow. Also needs a 440. But the stance, wheel choice and general car choice all kickass, and the Shaker scoop actually works here.

As a sidenote, the whole /Drive+ situation still irritates me. Their videos are good but not good enough that I feel like paying to see the whole thing.

Sucks compared to what? I’m sure this car performs its intended purpose very well. And that purpose is being a large barge capable of hauling the owner and several large friends in comfort and style.

It obviously was built well or it wouldn’t still be cruising around 40 years later.

You may or may not know more about cars than me. Really don’t care and in the grand scheme of things it really doesn’t matter. What I do care about is how you talk down to people on here and some of your rude and uppity comments. Get over yourself man.

50tbrd88, you’ve just stated what every Bangshift reader (and most likely the writers too) is thinking about the ColoradoLonelyOldMan. Good to see you taking the high road, rather than going under the bridge with this troll. I mean, really? Did your comment warrant a lengthy, two-post response like that? Made me lose my shit laughing. Not at the words, but at the extent of which he felt he needed to put you down. Better stay off his lawn next time dude! haha

That said, this car is awesome. These drove incredibly well. Not a handling machine, but for cruising, there was a feel to these big late 60’s early 70s cars that is incomparable. Pure style too. This is what’s wrong with today’s sedans…no style. They all look the same. Yes, it’s wretched excess at its finest. But that’s America!

Got to agree with the guys above, a 440 and some black paint would make this thing wicked.
Hell a Gen lll HEMI would make her a long distance cruiser that would be really tough to beat.

How about a Hellcat swap? You’d have a hard time keeping transmissions, axles and U-joints alive, but damn, would that be fun

OMG I must have a paisley print interior in my AMC. Amazing. Tasteful mods for a sweet and capable daily driver/cruiser. If I were to do an engine swap I’d go for the Eco-Diesel based crate from Banks. Plenty of torque and mileage to boot.

Well – that is to say . . . Unique.

Yes, the color sucks – a “grandma” color. Needs either a bright red or a dark blue or as stated – black.

While I agree that I’d paint the car black and add a 440, the biggest improvement I’ve noticed since coming back from seeing Mad Max is seeing that Bangshift has taken down the two bullshit rants from ColoradoKid/GuitarSlinger/ TJ Martin to 50tbrd88.
Is Bangshift paying this troll just to stir shit up on the website?

  7. ratpatrol66

Never seen one of these before? That car is sexy!!! It’s begging for a big inch Mopar of some sort! 426, 440, or as somebody suggested Hell Cat power?

  8. Bill Greenwood

I’m not sure what to think of Musto’s description of the 360 being weak. My folks had a 73 Fury with a 360 that was actually a pretty good runner. It could cruise easily at 80-85, with an honest 130 top end. I noticed that Monaco was only sporting the factory single exhaust, so it’s possible that the the stocker is feeling it’s age. An AirGap intake, a T-Quad, and proper duals would wake it up big time.
I’d rock that car with the stock hood, C-body Road Wheels on today’s equivalent of an L70-15 radial, and a stroked small block. 71 B-body “machine gun” exhaust tips would finish it off. Those big tail lamps are calling out to be sequentialized, though. No disagreements on the black, either.

  9. Tedly

That looks just fine the way it is, except I’d have to adjust that passenger side headlight cover. The Forrest Whitaker eye just bothers me.

The engine? Yeah, it definitely needs a big block in there.

Loe this car! Ive only ever seen them in pictures cant be many left. Plenty of Polaras around when I was a kid but not these. Id paint it Dark Green .
