Too Real: This British Touring Car Crash Puts A Car Up On The Barrier And Through The Camera Operator’s Stand…Yikes!

We can make jokes all we want about our positions at race tracks (see also: Lohnes’ Hand Injury) but truth be told, even with all of the safety precautions we can take, we aren’t truly safe when we cover events like we do. We know that, we accept that, and we mitigate the risks as best as we can, but in the end, shit happens. We don’t know when a car is going to hit a barrier, when a manifold is going to explode, or when the fire is going to come licking out from underneath the bodywork. We just take a shot at a “safe distance” and call it good. And sometimes good isn’t good enough. Take the poor gentleman who was filming the start of a British Touring Car race at Snetterton Circuit in England. BTCC racing isn’t known for gentle conduct and calm mannerisms, but two crashes at the drop of the flag is pretty impressive on it’s own accord, but it’s the second crash that has us cringing: While trying to avoid the first accident, Hunter Abbott’s Chevrolet Cruze managed to get barrel-rolling and went onto the barrier and into the stand that ITV cameraman Phil White was standing twelve feet in the air on. White was shaken, but uninjured and the drivers of the crash were able to walk away as well. With safety crews at the ready and as many precautions in place as possible, this was just a freak accident that luckily didn’t hurt anyone.
