Underwater Treasure Hunting: Pulling A 1973 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Out Of A River After 40 Years!

Underwater Treasure Hunting: Pulling A 1973 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Out Of A River After 40 Years!

What’s the quickest and most sure-fire way to guarantee that nobody is going to come looking for a car that you never want to see the light of day again? You sink it. Don’t ask how I know that, all I’m going to tell you is that I’ve never done it myself. But it’s true: between the satellite view of Google Maps and other methods, a lot of sunken vehicles that would have otherwise been left to the tempers of the waters they now resided in are being removed and dealt with properly. Besides the obvious navigation hazards, there’s the environmental impacts, the safety issues and the general health of the water to think about when it comes to a vehicle rusting away on the bottom of a lake, or a river, or maybe a few yards to the right of the boat ramp.

The story behind this fishing trip seems very, very strange indeed. Reportedly, the diver got a tip from a getaway driver who knew that there were more than a couple of vehicles sunk just off of the boat ramp of the Tualatin River in Oregon. Under several circumstances, in fact…maybe a cheated lover got pissed and hired a dude to make the dirty scoundrel pay by sinking the brand-new truck, maybe a stolen car or two went for a swim, maybe there’s a case or two of insurance fraud going on. Either way, it’s best that the vehicles get removed. From this spot alone, a Mazda RX-7, a Chevrolet LUV and three other vehicles were located. There’s no doubt that the car has been under the water for many years…the sound of tinny, crinkling thin metal will tell you everything you need to know. So will the engine that was not in the car. And that won’t be the end story for what’s not still with the car by the time the husk of what was a neat big-body Mustang gets dragged onto the ramp of the tow truck.

Wonder how long that Mach was a submarine- I can’t ID the engine by the oil pan but the long tubes give away it was someone’s Eleanor Having lost a Mustang to a thief it’s sad to think someone just ditched it. I’m pretty sure mine was stripped and turned into a race car, since there aren’t many charcoal grey 88 LX convertible race cars …. but I can’t believe the current owner knew the cars history. I mean how much $$$ we all leave in the pits between runs? So it’s not the racer and a bill of sale deal on a fox to race ? Not his fault either

Yep, the glass was the only thing good on the whole car. That rear window glass is getting hard to find. Looked like a Cleveland and with those big rear tires and gold nugget wheels, I would date it to late ‘ 70s early ‘ 80s.

Shawn,Save the environment? The fluids in these cars leaked out of those rust holes many moons ago. Typical tree hugger, just wasting time and energy and money pulling these things out.
