Unhinged: Getting A Volvo To Play Toto And What Songs I’d Have My Cars Playing

Unhinged: Getting A Volvo To Play Toto And What Songs I’d Have My Cars Playing

One of the more interesting videos that’s come across my desk in the last few days is this one. A fellow by the name of Chris Ng decided that his Volvo 240’s key-in chime was either too boring or too annoying. Honestly, the Volvo’s “ding-ding-ding” isn’t as bad as some chimes I’ve heard. Ever hear the seat belt buzzer in a mid-1970s Camaro? That’ll get on your nerves after a while. So what to do about the noise? The usual answer is easy: unplug the noisemaker box and enjoy blessed silence, or go the direct route and cut the wires. Either way, no more chime. But Ng went well above the call of duty and made a chime that plays an 8-bit version of “Africa” by Toto. If that doesn’t fit the 1980s vibe of a Volvo 240 wagon, nothing does.

I’m now looking outside at the fleet of vehicles at BangShift Mid-West and wondering what song each should be playing. But what song would fit each car? The Cadillac might be the simplest choice out of all of them: it’s big, brash, unapologetically rude and crude, so I think “Move Bitch” by Ludacris would be absolutely fitting. Angry Grandpa’s all-Chrysler beeps and bells could be replaced, but do I honor my grandfather’s memory, at which point I’m looking to some light jazz notes, or do I embrace the Chrysler’s wild side and go off the deep end? What about the Mustang, the funky 1980s machine? There, I think something from the catalog of The Cars would be an appropriate choice. And then there’s the Imperial, which had a very unique set of beeps and other noises I’ve never heard in any other Chrysler product. It’s no longer a luxoboat…it’s not quite a machine of violence (no matter how much I like that idea)…what would you play in that car? And what would you play in your own car?
