Video: 1960s Drag Film From Atco – NHRA’s Bob Frey As A Kid – Gassers, Garlits, Nitro, Perfection!

Stop whatever you are doing now and press play below for a 24 minute time travel trip back to the early 1960s at Atco Dragway in New Jersey. Atco remains one of the best known drag plants on the east coast and this video is a great window into how the golden years of the sport played out at the strip. The title of the video is, “It’s a Sport, Baby!” and the purpose seems to be to educate those unaware of the sport and the people who participate in it. The announcer is kind of a smart ass guy with attitude who throws some funny shots in along the way (a dig at “overpriced hot dogs” and “cups of flat Pepsi” sound like stuff people still gripe about today).

You’ll see a ton of awesome race cars, specifically gassers a-plenty, lots of nitro burning action with the team from K&G Speed Shop as they run their 554 1934 Chevy (which appears to be a tribute to the famous Mooneyham and Sharp 554 1934 that ran in California). A true gem in this video comes along at right about the 18-minute mark when the announcer at Atco is shown. We recognized the voice immediately and then replayed it to be sure. It is the voice of the NHRA, Bob Frey, as a young buck! Unless we’re nuts, and that maybe the case.

This is the finest old school drag racing video we have seen in some time! PRESS PLAY BELOW!
