In today’s world of great editing, high definition camera, and slick video tricks, it is easy for a cool piece of raw video to get missed. Take this purely awesome video of a top run for example. The helmet mounted camera captures all kinds of neat stuff here and even fire licking into the cockpit of Phil Read’s rail as he heads down the quarter mile in Perth, Australia. It also captures a very cool perspective of what it is like when these guys pull off the track and survey the carnage.
Pay attention to several things while watching this clip. The real action starts round 0:44 although even just the part where he is waiting to pull into the water box is bad ass because you can just here the dragster cackling away. Firstly, check out the idle speed on the digital RacePak dash as it is nearly 3,000 RPM! Also, when Read hammers the throttle on launch note that the motor goes from idle to 7500 RPM so fast that the display doesn’t “roll up” the numbers, it literally goes from 2700-2800 to 7500 as quickly as if someone had thrown a light switch.
The engine explodes late in the run and you’ll see some fire lick into the cockpit of the car. We noticed that Read’s machine had the very high windscreen that many drivers were running here over the last couple of seasons to prevent major fire entering the low pressure area where the driver sits. It worked pretty well in this instance as the fire is a brief flash and he was in no immediate danger. Lastly, note that when Read climbs out of the car and turns around to see the damage, it is a smoking, smoldering pile of messed up Hemi. The blower is all crooked and cockeyed, there’s stuff flowing out of it, and it is generally pretty sad looking. His crew guys run onto the scene and are all ready to get to work, though!
This is a neat video. It is one of the most honest and unfettered top fuel videos you’ll see from a driver’s perspective.

Wow…..from 2800 rpm idle to redline in just a few frames. If only my motor had that kind of throttle response.
