This Video Shows How Ford Will Get A 2015 Mustang To The 86th Floor Of The Empire State Building Quickly

A couple weeks ago we told you the story of how Ford loaded a Mustang into an elevator at the Empire State Building in 1965 and displayed it on the 86th floor observatory of the building for a short time. This move got a ton of attention and resulted in some amazing photos of a complete car nearly 1,000ft above the ground in one of the world’s largest cities. Well, since everything is cooler after 50 years, the crew at Ford are going to replicate the stunt using a 2015 Mustang in the coming weeks to honor that famous first year of the world’s most popular pony car. There are some interesting and cool details to pay attention to here.

The first is that the guys in ’65 had it easier than the modern crew as the 1965 model was smaller than the new Mustang in virtually every way and since the elevators have not changed one inch since the building opened, today’s engineers needed to make more stuff fit in the same space. The built a mockup of an elevator to the exact size they will have to work with to check their work and then sized up the 2015 Mustang like it was a head of cattle and divided it up into different “cuts”. All of this work was done by DST Industries.

As you’d expect, there’s some neat thinking and creative work being done here. The deadlines are tight. Ford crews have 5 hours from the time they roll up to the door until the time that the observation deck opens for people to visit, so they have five hours to get the parts to the 86th floor and assembled. That’s hustle!

This video tells the story of the car, this history, and the plan to be successful at this unique operation on the 50th birthday of the Mustang. Can they pull it off?

You are 100% right. Two different companies. Dearborn Steel Tubing did the T-Bolt, this is a different operation. Story edited to reflect that.
