After a busy weekend of racing all over the country, there are plenty of wild videos floating around on Monday morning. This piece of video was shot at Cecil County Dragway in Maryland and it shows Alex Vettros in his famous yellow Mustang getting after it in competition. The run begins like lots of small tire drag runs, with both cars leaving clean and pouring in the coals under full acceleration. As the boost levels increase and the car really starts picking up speed things get weird, and bad.
As you will see, at about 300 feet down the course the car is working toward the center line and then at the eighth mile, the rear end completely washes out and Vettros makes a valiant effort to save the car. You can literally see the front wheel turn into the slide almost instantly. Problem is, the small front tires on drag race cars aren’t meant to have a lot of lateral grip for such situations. The car does start to come around but it is too late. Vettros his the wall very hard in a side slapping manner which launches the car up on two wheels and into the air. The ‘chute comes out and the car begins to slow, but it hits the wall again in almost the same way launching it for a second time skyward.
This car was built by the guys at DMC Racing and they did one hell of a job because it took two very, and we mean, very hard shots and kept Vettros safe. He was bruised up some and has to be sore as hell, but once you watch this video, it will prove why good chassis guys are so valuable…their work saves the occupants during wrecks like this.
It sucks to see a car with such history banged up but we’re hoping Dennis and his guys at DMC will be cuttin’ and choppin’ soon to get it back to life!
