Weld Porn: The Plasma Bike Gets A Coffin Style Aluminum Gas Tank

Anyone who has ever fabricated a gas tank knows that there is a lot of work that goes into making one, even if it is just a plane box. But throw in a bunch of angles and such, like a Coffin style motorcycle tank, and you are asking for trouble. Thankfully, Matt from Urchfab has not on the skill to design, but also to build, such a tank. This video is cool because he takes a design that he created using Cardboard Aided Design, and transferred that into his cnc plasma table to cut all the pieces out. Watching him work will absolutely show you just how awesome welding can be when parts fit so tight. I would have loved to have this tank on a bike without doing anything to the beautiful tig welds, but you not only get to see the welding happen, but also the finish work to smooth everything out into one continues looking piece.

I’m not normally a big coffin tank fan, but this one is super cool to watch coming together. And, the technique used is something that inspires me to build stuff of my own. Honestly, that’s the best part about watching someone like Matt work. He’s just one of the guys I watch online so I can learn and be inspired.
