An unidentified San Diego man is being sought by police after he pulled over and shot a boy who was throwing rocks at cars from a highway overpass with a crossbow. Outside of this news being totally off the charts wild, it certainly raises a few questions, the most major of which surrounds the severity of the shooter’s response. Was he in the right or did the guy go way too far by plugging this kid in the gut with an arrow?
Depending on the sizes of the rocks being thrown by these kids (yes, there were two, but the marskman only shot one) the man with the crossbow could have saved lives by preventing someone from catching a big rock in the face while driving or perhaps he prevented the start of a huge chain reaction crash that could have killed multiple people as well.
On the other side of the fence, the guy had a clear sightline to the kids and probably could have yelled and screamed at them to cease and desist immediately. Shooting one with the arrow certainly insured that they wouldn’t be back to chucking rocks that day though.
What’s your take? Did the shooter save lives or completely overreact and nearly kill a kid?
Other news sources say the “boy” was 16…old enough to know better. The rock throwing stopped. People are killed by throwing stuff off overpasses. Overreaction? Maybe, but so is throwing rocks at traffic.
I was once sitting at a stoplight in Gary, Indiana…a place you’d rather not be sitting. Two brats on the corner, maybe 10 or so, started throwing rocks at my truck. They were with who I assume was their mother. When I yelled at her to make them stop, she said “they weren’t hurting anything”. Some people do not know how to behave in our society. Who knows how many times the San Diego rock throwers hit the same car? Was this their first rock throwing adventure?
Shoot the parents, they’re the ones that didn’t teach the little bastards to respect other peoples property!
Play with the bull, get the horns…. stupid kids should have hauled ass out of there.
Imagine a world with out law, people would behave a lot differently.
There was a case here (Edmonton, Alberta) several years back where someone cut a hole in the chain link fence on a pedestrian freeway overpass, and dropped a boulder on a passing vehicle…..it went through the windshield, striking the driver in the chest. The driver succumbed to his injuries, and the waste(s) of skin that did it were never apprehended.
I’m certain the kid with the arrow hole in him, and his buddy, will not be repeat offenders…..it’s just too bad they don’t have enough brains (or respect for the well being of others) to realize it was way beyond a bad idea to do it in the first place.
Not a big supporter of vigilante justice, but I personally hope the archer is not caught!!
If the “kids” really were 16…. I bet even if screamed at they probably told the archer to go screw himself. At which point the marksman made things a lot clearer about his intentions
If he was 16, he had it coming, if he were 8 I’d be on the fence.
My sister’s friend’s Dad was killed three or four years ago on the 210 freeway when a brick thrown from the overpass went through the windshield. It’s not cool throwing objects into traffic, particularly solid objects.
Good shot.
If they want to take the risk of killing people by throwing rocks at cars they can take the risk of being killed themselves!
The reduction in other kids vandalism as a result of the fear of getting plugged with an arrow are probably a better result than just getting that one kid to stop for a short time. I say good on him!
F*cking a right he had it coming….and who knows, this Robin Hood might’ve saved some lives.
And don’t give me this shit……kids will be kids.
Sure, the lil brat needed an ass kicking for his lack of respect for other peoples’ property. But the crossbow guy is looking at hard time for assault with a deadly weapon. The cops would’ve charged the kid with a serious felony for his stupidity.
This is why someone needs to invent a long-range TAZER.
An armed society is a polite society. Too bad these kids provoked a confrontation while being under armed. As my dad always says, “Never take a knife to a gunfight”.
I’m saddened that anyone is hurt in this deal. I’m elated to know that the DRASTIC actions of one man probably prevented injury or death to others.
Sixteen, heh…were they shooting at Preiuses, give ’em a beer!! At midyear Corvettes or the unobtainable back glass of a fastback ‘Stang? Had it commin’!!
While he may have saved someone else an injury or death, his actions will be no less than being charged with attempted murder. At the least it will be manslaughter if the kid dies. His actions dont meet the actions of self defense, sorry.
Before my wife and I moved from our Peoria, IL home to the Chicago ‘burbs in ’08, a 16 year-old kid tossed a 25 lb chunk of concrete off an I-74 overpass – lofting it OVER an 8’ security fence, too – killing a woman in a passing car. He was caught, convicted and sentenced to 30+ years. I have also been a victim of this kind of crap with 2 different cars.
Excessive response from the driver? Maybe. This may also have been the “final straw” for this individual. Everyone has a breaking point and the kid may have found the driver’s. I can tell you that I’m fed up with people thinking that they can do whatever they want because no one is going to tell them what to do.
Dumb and dumber
It depends on the size of the rocks. If the rocks were anything bigger than gravel, then they could be considered weapons and the man could plead self defense. As others have mentioned, if the rocks were big enough, they could’ve killed someone. I feel for the parents more than I do the dumbass kid…
