War on Racetracks: A Refresher Course on the Saga of Social Circle, Georgia’s Proposed Drag Strip

War on Racetracks: A Refresher Course on the Saga of Social Circle, Georgia’s Proposed Drag Strip

The Walton Tribune recently ran a piece that does a nice job summing up the current state of the debate going on in Social Circle, Georgia, with respect to a proposed drag strip for the community. There is vocal opposition to the project which by all accounts is being spearheaded by some of the village elders who are scared that the race track will bring all kinds of hell and damnation to the community. The supporters of the project have organized as well, and what was once a lively joust of a contest has now become trench warfare.

Both sides of the debate are building their respective cases to present to the town government who will ultimately either allow the project to continue or kill it before one shovel of dirt is moved.

Donnie Clack is the man who wants to build the track. Clack already operates a successful track and is well respected in that community. He has done a pretty masterful job of staying above the fray, especially when the opposition group is citing a fatal racing accident that happened in 1969 at a long defunct drag strip as a reason to block this project. He has more self control than us, because with that logic we’d shift right into smart ass mode and probably sink our own ship.

Both sides have petitions, both sides have their supporters. The Planning and Zoning Commission will make the final call and according the the Tribune story, they’ve not been swayed in the court of public opinion by either side. We’ll have to see how the drama plays out in a couple of weeks when the two sides are able to present their respective cases and the board will have to make a call as to the future of the project.

Stay tuned!
