War on Racetracks: Town of Paris Presents Great Lakes Dragaway With Noise and Light Proposal

Historic Great Lakes Dragaway which has been in existence for more than 50 years in Union Grove, Wisconsin, is locked in a fight for life with the town of Paris, Wisconsin. The town is fighting the track on noise and light issues. Never mind the fact that the track predates virtually all of the people complaining about it and is a big part of the local economy.

Recently, the track’s attorney, in conjunction with the Paris town attorney drafted an agreement that would help alleviate the issues. The text of the agreement has not been published, but it seems like one heck of a read because it is nearly 60 pages in length.

While this seems like a strategic retreat on the side of the track, we think that it is the right move. Their options are to work with the town (as many tracks have been put in a position to do in recent years) or continue on until there is a grand showdown of some sort and tracks typically don’t win those.

It sucks that they have to do this, but the last thing we want to see is one of the most historic drag strips remaining in America shut down. We’ll continue to follow the story and when the document is released to the public we’re going to dig up the details.

Stay tuned, this is a long way from being over.
