If you have more than a half million dollars burning a hole in your jeans, let us direct you to the quickest and coolest way to spend it. We found the last Lola T70 Mk1 ever built for sale on eBay and to add to the coolness, this car was owned and the restoration was funded by Brian Johnson of AC/DC fame. In the event you did not know, Johnson is a huge car guy and a serious racer as well who has driven 24 hour races at places like Daytona and elsewhere. He’s no pretender. He’s also the guy who described racing this car as being like, “trying to make love to an alligator with a headache.” Now if that isn’t a great and descriptive use of words we don’t know what is!
This car was produced in 1965 and it was of course followed up by the Mk2 and its successors. The Lola T70 stands as one of the most beautiful race cars ever made and it was fast as hell to boot. This car is even gnarlier than it would have been when new because it has cranked out 640hp on the dyno and the car comes across the scales at like 1,500lbs. Combine that with the short wheelbase and the cutting edge technology of a half century ago and you can see where Johnson’s alligator analogy can come into play!
One of only 15 cars produced that year we have no idea how many of those 15 survived. Our money says that the number is in the single digits. These were race cars after all and race cars, especially light ones with massive power tend to get wrecked in really serious ways.
All things being equal, Johnson’s celebrity ownership and restoration of the car are cool but we think the machine stands well beyond his fame and solidly on its own wheels as one of the best and most cutting edge cars of its day. The fact that it is rolling sculpture also helps.
