Dady Rat Hits The Road! With Pieces From A 5-Ton Army Truck And A 19-Liter Duetz V12 Diesel

Dady Rat Hits The Road! With Pieces From A 5-Ton Army Truck And A 19-Liter Duetz V12 Diesel

It was in 2014 that we first showed you a wild rat rod project that was coming together in Pennsylvania. The machine was running and in the early stages of being sorted out at that point. Well, we’re happy to report that Johnny Stauffer has officially completed this crazed hunk of iron and this video proves that the freshly named Dady Rat is one bad hombre. Using parts from a military 5-ton truck, a custom frame, and a Duetz tractor engine, Stauffer has created a unique machine that looks and sounds like nothing else we have ever seen. The use of the 5-ton truck’s rear tires and transmission along with that huge Duetz engine really make this vehicle appear to be straight off the set of mad max.

The air cooled Duetz V12 displaces 19-liters and makes something on the order of about 400hp. The big number though is torque. More than 1,400 ft/lbs pour out of that sucker when Johnny opens the taps and starts spinning that truck transmission and rear axle as hard as it will spin. We love the fact that the machine sits level and the rear frame kick up must really be something to see in order to keep the thing from having cartoon levels of rake…not that other elements of the hot rod are not cartoonish like the fuel tanks that have been modified to look like bombs.

We have two videos for your viewing pleasure. The first one is nicely shot and it shows the Dady Rat driving down the road and rolling some coal out of that turbocharged engine. The only downside to the first video is that you don’t get much of that sweet diesel V12 sound that we know you want to hear. As a fix for that we have included a second video that is a little more on the rough side that has great audio from inside the Dady Rat as it drives down the road. Certainly not a screamer by any means in the rpm department but this thing is all about low end grunt. Now, the next video we are demanding from the Dady Rat guys is one of those huge rear tires being smoked, even if it is lightly just because it would look awesome.

Congrats to Johnny on finishing this project and getting it on the road!

  1. Schtauffer

We’ll have to see about getting a smoky burnout video this weekend at Stauffer Heritage Day. 🙂

  2. Chevy Hatin' Mad Geordie

“Maggy” engines are so cool – I remember there was a Tyneside company that ran immaculate Magirus Deutz dumptrucks back in the 1980s and they used to drive past my house regularly.

I love ratrods – the bigger the better. Its like attaching a huge electromagnet to a chassis and seeing what you pick up whilst driving through a junkyard.

    Now there’s a good idea…..
