Failure Video: Why Running “Stretched” Tires On Your Car Is A Recipe For Disaster

Failure Video: Why Running “Stretched” Tires On Your Car Is A Recipe For Disaster

Of the current popular automotive trends among “the kids”, weirdo camber and stretched tires are two that we don’t understand and outside of looking weird have some pretty bad downsides with regard to safety. This video stands as proof of what can happen when “stretched” tires are pushed to and beyond their limits and since taking too narrow a tire and forcing it across too wide a rim completely negates all of the tire’s qualities to begin with, no one really knows what those limits are.

The car you’ll see on the dyno is a turbocharged VW. You can see the intercooler in the nose of the car and it is rolling on some pretty big wheels. You can see virtually no sidewall on the tire because there’s none to see. The sidewall is stretched to the point of nearly being horizontal. Guys do this to get a wide tire look without fender rubbing and basically because the appearance of the tire is “totally sweet”. We dig a low profile sidewall as much as the next guy and we’ve gone a hair wider or narrower on wheel size than has been recommended in the past but this is way beyond the pale.

Basically when the dude gets into the throttle and the motor starts pulling hard the passenger front tire explodes and the shrapnel from the flying tire starts smashing and bashing everything in its path. The dyno rollers have a TON of inertia so they are still spinning super fast and they then proceed to destroy the wheel. You can see the sparks as the wheels is ground down by the textured surface of the roller.

We’re actually blown away that there are tire shops who will mount tires like this because in today’s sue happy world, we’re thinking that a kid or a kid’s parents will be at that place with papers in their hand after Johnny wrecks his car or kills someone because of a “stretched” tire failure. There’s dumb looking and then there’s dangerous. This is both.

Yeah, stretched tires and “The Stance Movement” are just plain stupid, and most of the time, very dangerous.

What’s even worse is that VW kids figured out that C4 Corvette wheels somehow bolt onto the GTI if you use enough spacers and extended wheel studs. So not only do they throw wheels on their cars that don’t fit, they have about 10″ of spacer and extended lug nut to fit a 17×9 wheel on a car so they can run a 195-width tire stretched onto them. You know, because that’s a great idea.

I have to say that there is a bit of misinformation here. Apparently these folks were doing a wide open pull in 6th gear, and the indicated wheels speed was somewhere north of 200mph. At that speed I don’t know that I would place the blame solely on what is assumed to be a stretched tire. I used to be part of that movement and ran stretched tires on a VW with slightly less power without any issues. Also, the stretch is more of a necessity in Europe where it’s actually illegal to have the tire tread extend beyond the fender lip. I don’t condone running a 195 on a 10 inch wheel, but sometimes going just a size down makes the difference to the scene guys. Either way, this was a recipe for disaster and definitely due to a lack of experience or common sense.

If it’s illegal to have tread sticking out of your fender wells, then buy smaller rims. Is it worth your life to be cool?

I believe “you’re” the moron, friend.

Again, I don’t condone fitting a smaller tire on your wheel than it was intended for, but just trying to enlighten some as to why folks are doing this. We all know hot rodders have had to be creative to keep their vehicles in compliance with the law.

I did some dumb things in my day, like running bald tires on the back so they’d smoke easier when leaving the towns only stop light. I lived to tell about it, and I hope these youngins do too.
I also had a few conversations with the local boys in black cars over it.

What about the dyno owner/workers that allowed this POS onto their machine? How can you run a dyno and not know that this is a recipe for disaster?

You guys have no clue…do you realize how big the stretch movement is? It is world wide. It’s all over Europe as well. Don’t be a fool from one video. There are many reasons that tire could have failed the same reasons a regular size could fail low air pressure, tire was already worn. The tie down was too tight causing the fender to touch the sidewall and it popped. All things that could cause any tire to fail. Possible factory defect. Believe non of what you hear and half of what you see folks. Have you ever heard of staging? Take a trip to a “euro event”. There are millions of cars running stretch. One failure on one video does not make it bad. Don’t be a sheep think for yourself.

I’m not looking to start a fight here but just because it works doesn’t mean it’s safe. If you can get a written statement from a tire manufacturer supporting the stretched tire practice, I’ll change my opinion.

That is a link to an official chart of size guides from Falken Europe indicating a maximum rim width difference for most of their tyres of about an inch and a half, and you can bet your arse they left a pretty decent safety margin in there too.

I know I’m in the minority on bangshift when I say that I love the stanced look, but I can at least be realistic and admit that it is impractical and while it can be done right and reasonably safe, most idiots dont bother.

Also I wish we could all stop being hypocritical… Stanced is unsafe and stupid but a 454 with 2 foot of blower, carb and scoop poking through the hood isnt? Its all a matter of personal taste.

The entire strength of a tire (ALL TIRES) is in the sidewall. stretching a 195 tire on a 10″ wide wheel (which it would need a 255 tire to fit properly) compromises the sidewall. That is a fact. There is no arguing with that.

The only reason people should be using wider wheels is to gain traction. If your wheel sticks out of the wheel well, you should really reconsider using a smaller wheel.

“one failure on one video does not make it bad”

it doesn’t make it look any less stupid though either…

lowriders have done this for many years before low profile tires this is not new and tuners in there shit box cars did not start the trend.

  7. elkyguy

“yeah, but all the cool guys are doing it!”—seriously, how many of these rides with the rubber band tires have you seen with the tires blown out,and the rims all messed up?—I do my grocery shopping next to a tire store, and lots of times,i roll in and see these fools waiting for another set of tires to replace the hoops that they just destroyed—maybe it is a thing in Europe, maybe their roads are glass smooth,or maybe, just maybe it really isn’t a good idea…..style don’t mean jack if it compromises your safety(and by extension, the safety of those sharing the road with you)

I’ve actually seen tire shops refuse to mount tires that way. And it wasn’t a major dealer either, it was a used tire shop.

  9. sbg

I’m not so old that I don’t remember doing things, that on balance, I wouldn’t do today. So what? nothing but a wallet was hurt in the making of this video.

Or maybe you’re going to put up a warning when you post a motor blowing up on a dyno, that people should not mess with stock motors because this is ultimately what will happen?

Really? I didn’t realize Consumer Reports had bought stock in BS.

  10. gordo abagado

Unlimited liability for whoever mounts them. I agree with the can’t fix stupid. Fix em up, make em fast, drive like hell..But on good tires and brakes. You can go off and kill your own fool self, it’s a free country. But endanger my safety. Take that stuff to a track.
