This is one of those videos that simply couldn’t exist before the days of “action sports cameras” like the Replay xD, GoPro, and all of the others on the market today. Back in the good old days there would be no way to have a camera strong, small, or tough enough to get this angle of racer Ken Hawkings blowing a transmission cooler line off, hosing the rear tires, and sending the car careening across track. Thankfully Hawkins was able to grab enough brake and get enough steering into the car before eating the wall in the other lane. Even better is the fact that the racer opposing Hawkins, Odie Coker got out of the hole cleanly and powered down the track leaving the scene of crime before Hawkins got all crossed up.
Hawkings and Coker were competing at a meet of the Southwest Junior Fuel Association which pits the cool, lightweight, and spindly dragsters against each other in heads up competition. These small block, injected, high winding cars are true throwbacks to the good old days of “cheap” racing where a guy could dig up some junkyard parts, tune them up, and get after it with his buddies. If you get the chance to watch these guys, do it because you’ll really dig the looks, sound, and performance of the cars. As proven by Ken Hawkins, they can sure be a handful and sprout a mind of their own in a hurry.
Anyway, this is one of the more interesting videos you’ll see as it is taken from a perspective that you simply don’t see!
THANKS TO NICK COKER FOR THE TIP!
