We spent some time with the guys from Smittybuilt and learned of a couple cool products that they have brought to market. Since Goliath, our 1966 C50 project truck, is a working brute, and Smittybuilt builds stuff for working trucks, we knew they’d have something we’d dig. Sure enough their new “Black Box” winch mounting system and budget priced 3,000lb XRC3 winch were right up our alley.
We’ve seen lots of winch mounts that use the receiver hitch of the truck they are being used on. They are convenient and all, but Smittybuilt has raised the bar by enclosing the winch in a steel box and adding storage compartments and lights to the unit. This allows you to see what you are doing at night and negates the need to climb in and out of the bed of your truck to get access to your tool box to get your winching supplies. We can see Goliath with a receiver front and back and this unit gracing either end of the big fellow. Since the box will accomodate up to a 12,000lb capacity winch, it is more than up to the job.

The other item that we were interested in was the budget priced 3,000lb XRC3 winch. The retail price on this winch is $200.00! We have actually seen them on sale for less than that. This would make for a perfect trailer winch to load and unload your race car with and the price cannot be beat. The electric motor is a beefy 3.9hp unit and although Smittybuilt sees it as an ATV and UTV unit, we’re thinking it would be right at home on the front of our trailer!
