One of the cooler funny car bodies of the 1960s was that of the Chevrolet Corvair. While the cars raised all kinds of controversy as road going vehicles, there funny car counterparts acted like you’d expect. That is to say that they were half way out of control at all times and when they weren’t sliding around they had their front ends up in the air and were hauling the mail like all of the early flip top funny cars did. These were not the advanced machines of today, they were pretty rude and crude but boy were they cool!
This video is really neat because we see many still photos of vintage Corvair funny cars laid over 1960s California drag strip ads and then there is a brief video interlude that shows a couple of Corvair funny car runs. The most notable is the hard crash of the Super Twister machine which manages to get all kinds of squirrley before bashing into the wall hard. We’re not 100% sure of the track but it looks a lot like New England Dragway circa the late 1960s. We’re sure someone will be able to identify the place in the video where the wreck occurred.
There are no “modern” nostalgia Corvair funny cars out there that we know of and that is a shame. These are cool bodies!
I saw a bunch of those cars at Fremont, SIR, Champion, run. Coolness, thanks
I remember building headers for Tom Sturm & Charlie Wilson when I was designer at Jardine Headers “Back In The Day”
Funny car indeed!
