Big Bore Dyno Music – Small Block V8s, Ferrari V12, and A Maserati Inline Six A Savannah Race Engineering

Yesterday we brought you the screams of small inch, four cylinder engines cranking away on the dyno at Savannah Race Engineering so today we’re bringing you some deeper tones and larger displacement mills. In this video you’ll see a Ford 302 crank over 7,000 RPM, a 305ci Chevy race motor turn 8,200, a Ferrari V12 make its sweet song, and a Maserati inline six engine also bark out a sweet tune. All of these engines were destined for vintage road racing cars and or exotics like a Ferrari Daytona. As good as the small block Ford and Chevy sound (and the Chevy sounds better) that 12-hole Ferrari engine is in a league all of its own. Two valves per cylinder, four camshafts, 350hp at peak, and destined to sit in one of the most beautiful cars ever made. How’s that for a charmed life! It was a 365 GTB/4 engine that powered Brock Yates and Dan Gurney’s wild trip across the country, winning the second Cannonball run. Averaging 80mph and hauling from NY to the Pacific ocean in 35 hours and 54 minutes, the pair certainly did it in style and with the 12-cylinder symphony playing in front of them.

We dig the fact that this shop does so much diverse stuff. While at base “engines are engines” they all have their nuances in assembly and tuning, so being able to handle a range like these guys do is pretty impressive. We can’t say that we have ever heard the tones of the Maserati engine before. Inliners have their own tune and this one is no different. That engine is a 120ci inline six that was used in late 1940s and early 1950s. It makes about 120hp but sounds a lot more stiff than that. One of the things you have to admire about the old European racing engines is how technologically advanced they were for their time. Multiple cams, multiple valves per cylinder, etc. That stuff is virtually the way of the world these days with a few major exceptions.

This video is 100% BangShift Approved like the last one. Listening to these engines work their guts out is something we could do all day!
