Hot Rod Garage Gets Back To Work On Bringing The Project X 1957 Chevrolet Back To It’s Roots!

Hot Rod Garage Gets Back To Work On Bringing The Project X 1957 Chevrolet Back To It’s Roots!

Messing with a car as iconic as Project X, the former Popular Hot Rodding 1957 Chevrolet project car, is a dicey affair, especially after tons of money had been thrown at the car to turn it into a full-on Pro Touring machine. The biggest complaint about the bright yellow Chevy is that it had strayed too far from it’s street-racer roots and the image that most people get nostalgic for, as the car was when it was featured in the movie Hollywood Knights. Then, it was hoodless, blown, and sitting on Cragars, and looked tough. When Hot Rod got Project X, it had been treated to a big-dollar build by General Motors and rolled out in full Pro Touring form…and was bashed for it. Ever since management decided that Tony Angelo and Lucky Costa’s hands were good enough to work on the 50-year and going project car, they’ve been making tweaks here and there to give back some of the old street fighter cred back to Project X. This time, they go for the suspension and tackle one thing that has bothered us about the car since GM worked on it: the grille. We know that someone spent good time working that custom grille, putting the fog lights in the bumper pods, and making the grille emblem, but seeing a restoration-quality stock 1957 grille, bar and trim just looks right. Some things you just don’t mess with…others, you tweak to your heart’s content!

When PHR went under, they should have retired Project X. GM royally cluster f**ked the car, but at least Hot Rod is slowly returning to its roots.

Putting a huffer with carbs on top of an LS is not as they put it, taking into the 21st century. It also does not look better with no hood. This might be one of those times where just because something on it could be changed does not mean it should be.

Right on! Looks great . Very happy to see protouring go away. Just because you can does not mean you should ezpecially on a 57 Chevy.

it’s their car, so they can do whatever to it. That said, what they’ve done is interesting; but I wonder why they’d do it to that car – it is iconic, and I hear them when they say it’s been changed over the years. That said, it’ll probably be a cold day in hell before GM builds them another car…. so why not start with another 57? giving it the Hot Rod treatment makes it even more collectible and it’s another car saved – heck, they could use one as the metric against which all subsequent ones are judged.

but what do I know? I stopped subscribing to Fashionable Hot Rod(ding) awhile ago…

This car has been evolving since PHR got it years ago and will continue to do so for a long time. and these guys on HRG are cool dudes, it would be fun to wrench on a car and have a beer with them!
