The Return Of The EcoDiesel: FCA Gets Certification For the Ram 1500 and Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Return Of The EcoDiesel: FCA Gets Certification For the Ram 1500 and Jeep Grand Cherokee

It wasn’t a surprise that once the Volkswagen diesel controversy erupted, that anything with an oil-burner was suddenly under the mother of all microscopes. And it definitely didn’t help matters for FCA when the International Council on Clean Transportation (the non-profit group that commissioned West Virginia University to test the Volkswagens that ultimately led to “Dieselgate” entering the common lexicon) announced that when FCA vehicles with the 3.0L VM diesel engine was tested, that it was dumping up to twenty times more pollutants that allowed by the Clean Air Act. Suddenly, two of FCA’s brightest stars, the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel pickups and the Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel, suddenly were under the gun. FCA has always maintained that testing wasn’t to EPA standards, that the company didn’t actively cheat the system, and that they would work with the EPA to fix whatever the issue happened to be.

To be fair, given the nuclear meltdown scene facing other companies, we almost expected FCA to get steamrolled over the whole deal and wind up left for dead on the street. But Allpar has recently broke cover that the EPA and CARB have approved the sale of the diesel V6 to the public once more, and that the same fix will be available for 2014-16 vehicles already sold, with no impact on fuel economy and just a slightly heavier use of DEF fluid as a change.

Ordering for new EcoDiesels is expected to reopen in the fall, for the 2018 model year.

30 mpg under normal hwy driving conditions in a full size crew cab 4×4. Why is that funny?

The efficiency gains inherent with diesels clearly negate the effects of particulates. Europe has some little oil burners that can tear up the autobahn.
