As you read this I’ll be heading to or working at Atlanta Dragway as part of the 2018 NHRA Southern Nationals. Atlanta Dragway was still a pretty new joint back in 1988 when this video was made and the track not only held the Southern Nationals but this event, the NHRA Winston All-Stars. The top 10 category finishers from 1987 were invited to compete for the big bucks at the track. Winston was funneling buckets of money into the sport at this time and the fact that they had more than 100-large for racers to win was proof of that.
The neat thing about this race was that with the small fields of cars, fans got an interesting experience and the TV coverage was cool as well because of the more relaxed environment of competition. We’re not going to give away the results here because that is lame and we’re guessing you want to see the video if you have clicked this far in to check it out.
The Winston All-Stars did not count as a points gathering event, it was a race for the money and a way for the best of the best to throw down. There’s a bunch of guys in this video that are still out and about in the sport. Heck, Mark Oswald will be crew-chiefing Antron Brown this weekend at the 2018 race.
