When it comes to stuff on the drag strip, very few vehicles rise to the level of what I would call, “wicked”. This is one of them. You are about to watch a MkII VW Golf that has all wheel drive and a 1,200hp 2.0L four banger attack Santa Pod, and when I say “attack” I mean it. This thing is so brutally powerful and prone to torque steer that it swaps lanes, tries to eat concrete and generally acts like the automotive equivalent of someone who just escaped from a mental asylum.
The Boba Motoring crew built this car and runs it and they have created what could be the single most entertaining VW drag racing vehicle in history. Leaving the starting line on 61psi of boost is a bad idea. When you have to leave at a measly 48psi to get the thing to work and not try and kill the driver, you know you have a monster.
Our favorite part of this car is the fact that you’d never know anything was amiss until it leaves the starting line. It looks like a stock wheelbase, warmed up VW Golf. Once the driver spools it up and comes off the line it looks like hell on wheels. Watch the guy put all the left steer into it and the thing still cruises across the centerline. Good news for him is that the other racer was barely to 60-feet and he was at the eighth mile. Wild.
It’s not a “sleeper” as everyone in European drag racing likely knows this car but if you didn’t….look out below. The elapsed times are deep into the 8s, the speeds are ridiculous and when it comes to a vehicle we’d pay a buck to watch every weekend, the is high on the list. Awesome!
